CIRE exam registration runs through the Fitch Learning candidate portal under the 2026 CIRO Proficiency Model. Here is the step-by-step booking flow, what you need before you start, and the cutoffs most candidates miss.

CIRE exam registration is the first concrete step toward writing the CIRE, the foundational exam under the 2026 CIRO Proficiency Model that replaced the Canadian Securities Course for investment dealer approval on January 1, 2026. The registration flow goes through Fitch Learning, not CIRO. Three small details in the booking funnel catch candidates out and force a rebook. This guide walks the registration end to end so you can pick a date, hold the seat, and start prepping with a clean deadline.
Before you register
You can click into the Fitch Learning portal and pay without preparing anything, but doing so almost always costs you a rebook later. Four things should be settled before you book the seat.
Your eligibility
Enrolment is not open to everyone. When you enrol, you attest that you are writing the exam either because you work at a CIRO Dealer Member in a role that needs these competencies, or plan to apply to one within the next 12 months, or because you intend to take further CIRO exams for which this one is a prerequisite. You must also be of the age of majority where you live. Education providers are not eligible, and CIRO can ask for evidence.
A realistic readiness date
The most common booking mistake is choosing a date that feels ambitious rather than a date that matches your hour budget. We estimate the CIRE syllabus takes 120 to 160 hours of focused prep for a commerce graduate and 200 to 250 for a career switcher. Translate that into calendar weeks at your real available study cadence (6 to 12 hours per week if you are working full time) and add a two-week buffer for the final mock-and-review sweep. The free 25-question CIRE diagnostic produces a calibrated readiness score against the published blueprint. It is the cheapest way to convert "I think I'm ready in 8 weeks" into a data-supported answer (the CIRE practice exam guide covers how to extend this to full-length mocks). Take it and you will likely find your initial date guess is off by two to four weeks in one direction.
Government-issued photo ID
Fitch Learning requires an original, unexpired, government-issued ID with your photo and signature at check-in on test day, at a test centre or remotely. The name on the ID must exactly match the name you enrolled and scheduled under. Candidates with hyphenated names, recent name changes after marriage, or transliterated names from a non-Latin script document hit a name-match issue at check-in. The fix is to enter the Fitch Learning portal name field to match the ID, including hyphens and middle names, before you check out.
If your only photo ID is expired, renew it before registering. Test centres do not accept expired ID even with a renewal receipt.
Workplace pre-approval, if applicable
If your employer is paying for the seat fee, get the pre-approval and the cost code on file before booking. Payment is by credit card only, at enrolment; neither CIRO nor Fitch Learning accepts any other method, so there is no invoicing your employer. Either you pay and claim reimbursement, or an authorized firm booker at your dealer enrols and pays for you. A surprising number of registrations get abandoned at checkout because the candidate has not pre-cleared expense approval and does not want to float the cost personally.
The CIRE registration flow on Fitch Learning
The actual booking takes about 15 minutes once the prerequisites are in hand.
Before you book: take the free 25-question CIRE diagnostic (no card). It returns a sectioned score against the published blueprint and a calibrated readiness estimate, so the date you pick reflects your actual gap to ready, not your hope.
Step 1: Create your Fitch Learning candidate profile
Go to the Fitch Learning enrolment site, click Enrol on the exam, and create your account if you do not already have one from a previous CIRO exam: you enter an email address, verify it with a code, accept the terms and complete your profile. The name you enter drives the test-day ID match. Enter it as it appears on the ID you will bring.
If you enrolled in any CIRO exam before (the CIRE or any of the other eight), log in with the same account. Fitch's support site says you only need to create your account once.
Step 2: Select the CIRE from the exam catalogue
The enrolment site lists all nine CIRO Proficiency Model exams. Pick the Canadian Investment Regulatory Exam (CIRE). CIRE is the only official abbreviation; CIRO names the other eight exams in full. Then complete the exam attestation (see "Your eligibility" above). All nine exams are available in French. Choose the language at enrolment or booking, because it cannot be changed on exam day.
You enrol once per exam. The $475 enrolment covers your first attempt; if you need a retake, you buy it later through a link in the candidate portal. If you are registering for the CIRE and a role-specific exam at the same time (for example, CIRE plus the Retail Securities Exam for a retail-advisor path), each exam is its own enrolment. The fee is the same for every exam, and an enrolment cannot be moved to a different exam.
Step 3: Pay the enrolment fee
At checkout, Fitch Learning collects the $475 enrolment fee, plus applicable taxes. That buys the first attempt in a 12-month enrolment period; second and third attempts in that period are $300 each. Payment is by credit card only. If your employer is reimbursing, keep the invoice. Fitch says it should arrive by email within 30 minutes of purchase; contact Fitch support if it has not arrived within 24 hours.
Step 4: Pick a test centre (or remote) and date
After payment, your exam appears in the candidate portal, and the confirmation email links to it. There you choose in person at a Prometric test centre in Canada or remote proctoring through Prometric ProProctor, then search for a centre and date. Candidates outside Canada must write remotely. Availability varies by centre and date.
Pick a date two to four weeks past your honest readiness date. The extra buffer absorbs the mock-and-review cycle, the inevitable life event that eats a study week, and the final-pass review of the rule citations. Book the earliest date matching your initial readiness estimate and you'll reschedule at least once.
If your preferred test centre and date are not available, check secondary cities within driving distance, or switch to remote. A two-hour drive on test day beats delaying by three weeks.
Step 5: Lock the date in your calendar with the reschedule cutoff
You can reschedule or switch between test centre and remote up to 36 hours before the appointment at no extra fee. Any change inside 36 hours, or a no-show, is recorded as an absent (a fail) with no refund.
Put both dates in your calendar with reminders. The reschedule cutoff is easy to miss, and missing it costs you an attempt.

Start prep on a structured schedule
A booked CIRE seat without a written study schedule slips. Block your weekly study hours in your calendar through the exam date. CIRE registration FAQs
Can I register for the CIRE without a sponsoring employer? You don't need a sponsor to enrol, but enrolment is not open to everyone. You must attest that you work at a CIRO Dealer Member in a role that needs the exam, or plan to apply to one within 12 months, or intend to take further CIRO exams that need this one. Sponsorship is required for the approval step that happens after you pass (you cannot become a registered representative without a sponsoring CIRO investment dealer).
Can I register for the CIRE before completing other exams? The CIRE is the foundational exam in the Proficiency Model. You do not need to write any other CIRO exam before the CIRE. CIRO does not publish a required order for the other exams either; its FAQ says the only requirement to enrol is the eligibility attestation. For approval, most dealing categories need the CIRE plus a role exam (for example, the Retail Securities Exam for a retail RR).
How early can I register? Enrolment starts a 12-month period for up to three attempts, so don't enrol long before you plan to write. You can schedule right after purchase or later in the candidate portal. How far ahead you can book depends on Prometric availability, so check the calendar when you schedule.
Can I reschedule the CIRE after I register? Yes, at least 36 hours before the appointment, including switching test-centre versus remote, at no extra fee. Inside 36 hours, a missed sitting counts as an absent fail.
What if I need to cancel entirely? Refunds are narrow. Under Fitch's fees policy, you get one only if you paid in error and ask within 24 hours, or if, before taking the exam, a documented serious illness, family illness or death in the family stops you using your remaining attempts in the enrolment period. Otherwise, reschedule within your 12-month enrolment instead, at least 36 hours before the appointment.
Do I need a CIRO course pack? No. The Exam Hub says the proficiency model does not require a preparatory course. The official PDFs are free.
Is the CIRE available online or only in-person? Both. Prometric test centres in Canada, or Prometric remote proctoring (ProProctor). You can switch delivery mode up to 36 hours before the appointment.
