Definition
CIPF protects client property at CIRO investment dealers and mutual fund dealers if the firm becomes insolvent. Coverage is up to $1 million for all general accounts combined (such as cash, margin, TFSA and FHSA accounts), plus $1 million for all registered retirement accounts combined (such as RRSPs, RRIFs and LIFs), plus $1 million for RESPs where the client is the subscriber. Coverage applies to cash, securities, and certain commodity contracts. CIPF does not cover market losses, unsuitable recommendations, or fraud by third parties - only insolvency-driven shortfalls. CIPF member firms are CIRO investment dealers and mutual fund dealers. Mutual fund dealer accounts located in Quebec are not covered unless the firm is also an investment dealer.
